This exhibit surveys Canada’s rich linguistic landscape, including over 60 aboriginal languages, Canada’s two official language (English and French), and more than 100 languages that immigrants have brought to our shores.

The exhibition explores themes that touch the lives of speakers of every language in Canada, such as: How have the languages of Canada changed over time? What happens when languages come in contact? How can our languages be maintained for future generations?

Join us at York Region Forest, Pefferlaw Tract, for a guided walk with James McKenna of Trail Treks Canada. Learn about the connections between trees and books through a scientific and cultural lens and gain a better understanding of how trees have informed our concept of storytelling and how to “read” a tree. 

James McKenna has passion, experience and education in both trees and books that have informed this unique presentation. After graduating from the Sir Sandford Fleming School of the Environment and Natural Resource Sciences with Academic Distinction, he has worked as an urban forester in the public, private and non-profit sectors.

James is recognized as an Urban Forest Professional, Tree Risk Assessor and Certified Arborist by the International Society of Arboriculture. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Media, Information and Techno Culture from Western University and is an avid reader and book club organizer.

Join Andrea Gunraj, author of Go-Between Girl: My Indentured Roots as Reclaimed Present, to explore the stories families pass down and the silences that shape us. Drawing on her Indo-Caribbean heritage, she reflects on memory, migration, and identity while inviting the audience to consider their own personal legacies. She asks how the past lives within us, what we choose to carry forward, and how storytelling can help us understand where we come from.

CMHA, York Region Branch, was founded in 1984 and is dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with mental illness. We help people learn how to maintain their mental health, look for and identify the signs of mental illness, and get help and support when they need it. Through several locations across York Region and South Simcoe, we provide a wide range of services to assist individuals with their recovery. Our multi-disciplinary team of professionals are dedicated to assisting people achieve their optimum level of mental health.
