About the Maker Space

The Maker Space at Georgina Public Library is a collaborative space where people of all ages can explore, create, and learn using innovative tools and technology. Featuring equipment such as 3D printers, laser cutters, creative workstations, and sewing machines, the Maker Space offers hands-on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) experiences that foster creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, and lifelong learning.

Maker Space Guidelines

  • Users 13 years of age and older are welcome to use the Maker Space independently. Users under 13 years of age are welcome to use the space under the direct supervision of a parent or guardian.
  • Please seek staff approval before using any of the equipment. Users need to become certified by Maker Space staff before using equipment independently.
  • During peak times, Maker Space equipment may be limited to one hour per day per user.
  • 3D printing requests have a minimum turnaround time of seven business days.
  • Due to the nature of the equipment in the Maker Space, we ask that you do not bring food or beverages into the Maker Space.
  • For your own safety, we encourage you to wear closed-toed shoes.

Access Requirements: The Maker Space is available for use by anyone who meets the following requirements:

  • Holds a valid Georgina Public Library card (library cards are free to anyone living, working, attending school, or paying taxes in Georgina).
  • Users must be 13 years of age and older. Users under 13 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times, and the parent or guardian will be considered the main user.

  • Attend a Maker Space Program
  • Attend our Maker Space Open Hours:
    • Tuesdays (until August 25) 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
    • Thursdays (until August 27) 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
    • Saturdays (until August 29) 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Book a 1-on-1 appointment with our Maker Space programmer to learn how to use the equipment.

Once you email for a booking, our Maker Space programmer will be in touch within 4 days to confirm your appointment.

Your first appointment will be with our Maker Space programmer so you can become familiar with the equipment. The goal of these appointments is for you to be able to work safely and independently in the space. This may take several appointments.

Rules and Guidelines:

  • In order to guarantee access to the Maker Space, we encourage you to book an appointment ahead of time.
  • Users can access one piece of equipment per appointment.
  • Users are limited to a maximum of one appointment per day.
  • Appointments are one hour in length.
  • Reservations will be held for 10 minutes after the scheduled start time.
  • The individual who reserves the equipment will be considered the primary user and is responsible for any damage or misuse.
  • Library staff can only offer limited assistance with graphics design. We encourage you to select
    pre-made designs from our catalogues.

General Usage:

  • Equipment must be used in the Maker Space and cannot be taken offsite.
  • Users must save any work on an external memory device.
  • No food or drinks of any kind are permitted in the Maker Space.
  • Maker Space computers are reserved for digital media projects and not for general computer use.

3D Printer

Bambu X2D Guidelines

Experience 3D printing with our Bambu X2D. Bring your designs to life, whether you’re a pro or a beginner.

Software:

The following software is used to slice and send compatible jobs (.STL) to the 3D printers.  

The following software is free to find/create 3D designs.  

To inquire about getting something printed, please visit our Maker Space Open Hours or email makerspace@georgina.ca. Please allow for a minimum of 7 business days for your print to be completed.

Glowforge Guidelines

Unleash your creativity with our Glowforge laser cutter! Transform digital designs into functional and artistic objects using wood, leather, acrylic, and more. Choose from our materials or bring your own. Our Maker Space staff will provide guidance on material compatibility. Get ready to craft stunning projects with precision and ease!

The Glowforge is free to use if patrons supply their own materials. If you would like to bring in your own material, it must be approved by a Maker Space staff member.

Materials provided by the Library:

  • Plywood *plus required masking tape* $10.00/bundle (12” x 19”)

*Upon purchase, patrons will own the entire piece of material and can use the piece of material for multiple projects.

Cricut

Cricut Guidelines

Fuel your creativity with the Cricut Maker! Design and cut illustrations on a variety of materials, creating anything from intricate paper artwork to large vinyl signage. Let your imagination run wild in your creative space.

The Cricut Maker is free to use if patrons supply their own materials. If you would like to bring in your own material, it must be approved by a Maker Space staff member.

Design and cut on various materials:

  • Heat transfer vinyl $2.00/sheet (12" x 10")*
  • Permanent vinyl $2.00/sheet (12" x 12")*
  • Cardstock $0.50/sheet (8.5" x 11")*
  • Transfer tape $0.50/sheet (12" x 10")*

*The Cricut is free to use if patrons bring their own materials.

Cricut Heat Press and Mug Press

Explore endless possibilities in personalizing clothing, accessories, and home décor using our equipment. 
Design and cut various heat-press materials with our Cricut machines, and complete your project on our Cricut Heat Press. Purchase materials on-site, and our staff is here to assist, ensuring safe and successful applications. Unleash your creativity with our Cricut Mug Press and Heat Press—perfect for crafting custom mugs, t-shirts, and more using heat transfer vinyl and sublimation. 

The Cricut Heat Press and Mug Press are free to use if patrons supply their own materials. Patrons can also purchase the following materials to use on our machines.

Sewing and Embroidery Machine

Elevate your creations with custom embroidery on the Singer SE9180 Sewing and Embroidery Machine. Whether you're personalizing garments or adding unique touches to your projects, these machines offer the versatility and precision needed for exquisite custom embroidery work.

  • Thread $0.75/1000 stitches (Sewing is free if patrons supply their own materials.)

Machines are free to use if patrons supply their own materials (Glowforge and Cricut Maker only). Materials must be approved in advance of use by Maker Space staff to ensure compatibility with machines; patron must make an appointment with Maker Space staff or attend drop-in hours with material in order to have material assessed. Advance approval by Maker Space staff is required for use of large quantities of materials if materials are being supplied by Georgina Public Library.
