What is a Maker Space?

  • A Maker Space is a place where people come together to build, innovate, and learn using shared tools and resources. It promotes collaboration, hands-on learning, and creativity across various fields.
  • Georgina Public Library's Maker Space is a hub for making and creating. It offers our community access to services and equipment such as 3D printing, laser cutting, high-end creative workstations, sewing machines, and much more.

The Maker Space will provide a variety of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics), based tools and programs for all ages. The Library will provide opportunities for: hands-on experimental learning, critical thinking, creativity and problem solving within a collaborative learning environment.

Codey Rocky: Exploring the World of Sensors: Discovery Branch--Wednesday, March 18

Repair Café: Discovery Branch--Saturday, April 11

A Repair Café brings together people with items to repair and volunteer fixers with tools to share. Presented in collaboration with the Regional Municipality of York and NewMakeIt. Stop by the Town of Georgina Waste booth to explore local waste programs, get helpful sorting tips, and recycle your used household batteries.

About this event: A Repair Café is an event where people can bring a variety of household items to be fixed for free. Whether you’re unsure how to do the repair, don’t have the space or the right tools, the Repair Café offers a solution. Volunteer fixers are available to assess your needs and will do their best to fix your item. Specialties at each Repair Café may differ as it is dependent on the volunteer fixers attending that day. When you register online, please indicate the item you are bringing. If you know your repair will require replacement parts (e.g. bicycle tire tube, buttons, etc.) please bring the parts with you. Repair Cafés offered at the Georgina Public Library are exclusively for York Region residents.

Origami Fun for Beginners: Discovery Branch--Saturday, May 9

This hands-on workshop introduces participants to the art of origami through simple, engaging folds that build creativity, focus, and confidence. In celebration of Asian Heritage Month, the program also highlights origami’s cultural roots and its role in sharing joy and connection through paper art. Presented by Origami Canada.

Origami Canada is a community-based nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting origami as an accessible art form for creativity, education, and well-being. Through workshops, exhibitions, and outreach programs, we use origami to foster cultural exchange, mindfulness, and community engagement across diverse age groups.

About the Maker Space

Who can use the Maker Space?

Access Requirements: The Maker Space is available for use by anyone who meets the following requirements:

  • Holds a valid Georgina Public Library card (library cards are free to anyone living, working, attending school, or paying taxes in Georgina).
  • Users must be 13 years of age and older. Users under 13 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times, and the parent or guardian will be considered the main user.
  • Completion of a Maker Space Waiver is mandatory.

Ways to Use the Maker Space

  • Attend a Maker Space Program
  • Book a 1-on-1 appointment with our Maker Space programmer by email to learn how to use the equipment.

Do I need to make a Maker Space appointment?

Book a 1-on-1 appointment with our Maker Space programmer by email.

Once you email for a booking, our Maker Space programmer will be in touch within 4 days to confirm your appointment.

Your first appointment will be with our Maker Space programmer so you can become familiar with the equipment. The goal of these appointments is for you to be able to work safely and independently in the space. This may take several appointments. 

Rules and Guidelines:

  • In order to guarantee access to the Maker Space, we encourage you to book an appointment ahead of time.
  • On the spot appointments will be available as staffing allows.
  • Users can access one piece of equipment per appointment.
  • Users are limited to a maximum of one appointment per day. 
  • Appointments are one hour in length.
  • Reservations will be held for 10 minutes after the scheduled start time.
  • The individual who reserves the equipment will be considered the primary user and is responsible for any damage or misuse.

General Usage:

  • Equipment must be used in the Maker Space and cannot be taken offsite.
  • Users must save any work on an external memory device. 
  • No food or drinks of any kind are permitted in the Maker Space.
  • Maker Space computers are reserved for digital media projects and not for general computer use.

3D Printer

Ultimaker S3 Guidelines

Experience 3D printing with our Ultimaker S3. Book time to bring your designs to life, whether you're a pro or a beginner. 

Ultimaker S3:

  • PLA Filament –$0.10 per gram of filament used (Price includes HST)
Laser Cutter 

Glowforge Guidelines

Unleash your creativity with our Glowforge laser cutter! Transform digital designs into functional and artistic objects using wood, leather, acrylic, and more. Choose from our materials or bring your own. Our Maker Space staff will provide guidance on material compatibility. Get ready to craft stunning projects with precision and ease!

The Glowforge is free to use if patrons supply their own materials. If you would like to bring in your own material, it must be approved by a Maker Space staff member.

Materials provided by the Library:

  • Plywood *plus required masking tape* $10.00/bundle (12” x 19”)

*Upon purchase, patrons will own the entire piece of material and can use the piece of material for multiple projects.

Cricut

Cricut Guidelines

Fuel your creativity with the Cricut Maker! Design and cut illustrations on a variety of materials, creating anything from intricate paper artwork to large vinyl signage. Let your imagination run wild in your creative space.

The Cricut Maker is free to use if patrons supply their own materials. If you would like to bring in your own material, it must be approved by a Maker Space staff member.

Design and cut on various materials:

  • Heat transfer vinyl $2.00/sheet (12" x 10")*
  • Permanent vinyl $2.00/sheet (12" x 12")*
  • Cardstock $0.50/sheet (8.5" x 11")*
  • Transfer tape $0.50/sheet (12" x 10")*

*The Cricut is free to use if patrons bring their own materials.

Explore endless possibilities in personalizing clothing, accessories, and home décor using our equipment.
Design and cut various heat-press materials with our Cricut machines, and complete your project on our Cricut Heat Press. Purchase materials on-site, and our staff is here to assist, ensuring safe and successful applications. Unleash your creativity with our Cricut Mug Press and Heat Press—perfect for crafting custom mugs, t-shirts, and more using heat transfer vinyl and sublimation.

The Cricut Heat Press is free to use if patrons supply their own materials.

Sewing and Embroidery Machine

  • Thread $0.75/1000 stitches (Sewing is free if patrons supply their own materials.)

Is the equipment free to use?

Machines are free to use if patrons supply their own materials (Glowforge and Cricut Maker only). Materials must be approved in advance of use by Maker Space staff to ensure compatibility with machines; patron must make an appointment with Maker Space staff or attend drop-in hours with material in order to have material assessed. Advance approval by Maker Space staff is required for use of large quantities of materials if materials are being supplied by Georgina Public Library.

What are the guidelines for using the Maker Space? 

The Maker Space is an evolving resource; therefore, these guidelines are subject to change without notice.

Supervision:

  • Children under 13 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Parents or guardians are responsible for their children's use of Maker Space equipment.

Equipment Usage:

  • Participants must stay with the equipment during use (except for the 3D printer).
  • No illegal, dangerous or otherwise inappropriate materials will be printed.
  • Users must not infringe copyright when using the printer.
  • All print jobs must be approved by a staff member.
  • The Library is not responsible for the functionality or quality of 3D printed content.
  • Unclaimed 3D printed items may become Library property.

Occupancy:

  • Occupancy levels are in place and subject to change.

Supplies:

  • If participants wish to bring their own supplies, they will need to discuss with Maker Space staff in advance.
  • Limited materials are available for purchase.

File Storage:

  • Files on Maker Space computers are deleted after each use.
  • Patrons must save work on their own external USB.

Food and Beverage:

  • No food or beverage is allowed in the Maker Space. Water is allowed in a closed container. 

Safety and Ethics:

  • Participants must use the Maker Space safely, responsibly, and ethically.
  • Adhere to Library policies and relevant laws, including health and safety, equipment procedures, copyright, and licensing.
  • Content creation must not violate provincial or federal law, pose a threat to others, be inappropriate for the library environment, or violate intellectual property rights.

Closure Advisory:

  • The Maker Space may occasionally close for maintenance or due to unexpected staff shortages.
    Contact us before visiting for the latest information.
  • These guidelines ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all Maker Space users.
