OverDrive--eBooks and eAudiobooks

Get started with OverDrive.

Important Notice:  Since September 1, 2020, the OverDrive app and OverDrive websites have displayed messaging on devices currently using TLS 1.0 and 1.1 to alert affected users of the updated system requirements, with a link to this help article. Now that this change is complete, affected users will no longer be able to access your OverDrive service from devices using TLS 1.0 or 1.1.

We understand the inconvenience this may cause for your patrons on affected devices. This change was necessary to uphold our standards of security and patron privacy, and our commitment to delivering a quality experience to all OverDrive users.

As a reminder, TLS (Transport Layer Security) is the technology that keeps data private when it is sent over a secure (https) internet connection. TLS versions 1.0 and 1.1 date back to 1999 and 2006, respectively, and have since been replaced on most devices by TLS 1.2, which addresses weaknesses and vulnerabilities in the earlier versions. At OverDrive, TLS protects the privacy of patron data, including library card information.

User impact

This update most affects users with older Android devices that cannot upgrade to at least Android version 5, including early Kindle Fires, early Samsung Galaxy tablets, and Kobo Arc devices (all of which were released in 2014 or earlier). Based on our analytics, usage of these devices has been consistently declining and currently accounts for less than 1% of users across all OverDrive libraries. Most devices that don't support TLS 1.2 are also no longer supported by their manufacturers, cannot access other modern apps and websites, and currently offer a substandard experience with many apps and websites.

To keep using the OverDrive app and OverDrive websites, affected patrons need to either update their device's operating system (if possible) to a version that supports TLS 1.2 or switch to a device that supports TLS 1.2.

Libby users on Android devices should not be affected by this change, as Libby’s minimum system requirements were already raised to Android 5 in June 2020.

First time OverDrive users, read the instructions on how to get started. Users may prefer using the Libby app (for Android and Apple). You can use Libby in place of, or in addition to, the OverDrive app. Of course, you can also continue to use the OverDrive app exclusively if you'd rather not try Libby at this time.  Need help? OverDrive now offers Front Line Tech Support. Email Ruth, eServices Library Technician, for any tech issues you are encountering.

What is the difference between Libby and the OverDrive app?

Libby is a secondary app released by OverDrive. It has the same collection of titles as the OverDrive app - it's just a different way to access the same digital library collection. Libby is a fast and attractive digital browsing experience.

Libby is compatible with Android and iOS devices, and Kindle Fire. Libby is great if you just want to download a book to your Android or iOS phone or tablet.

OverDrive is the "classic" app, and is compatible with Kindle Fire, Macs, PCs, and Windows mobile devices. It also allows for transfer to MP3 players from computers.

Installing Libby

Install the free Libby app from your device's app store. Libby is available for Android, iOS, and Windows 10 devices.
  1. Open the app and find Georgina Public Library. You can search by library name, city, or postal code.
  2. Browse our collection of digital materials and select a title to borrow. When prompted, use your library card number to sign in.
  3. Borrowed titles download automatically to your Shelf, so you can read them offline. From your Shelf, you can tap Start Reading or Start Listening to begin a title. Or tap the cover image and then tap Send to Device.
Adding library cards in Libby

To add a library card:

  1. Go to Menu icon> See Library Cards.
  2. If you have more than one library, use the drop-down to choose the right one.
  3. Tap Add A Card (or Add Another Card).
  4. Tap Choose Your Location or Enter Library Account Details, and follow the prompts to add your card.

Removing a library card in Libby

Removing a card deletes its loans and holds from your Shelf and removes that library from your current device. If you ever add your card to Libby again, any active loans and holds will reappear.

Use the steps below to remove a card:

  1. Go to Menu> See Library Cards.
  2. Tap Actions (on your card).
  3. Tap Remove Card, then Yes, Remove Card.

If you set Libby up on other devices with a setup code, the library card will automatically be removed from those as well.

Renaming library cards

  1. Go to Menu> See Library Cards.
  2. Tap Actions, then Rename Card.
  3. Rename your card, then tap Save.

Signing out of Libby

Libby doesn't have a sign out button. Instead, you can remove your library cards or reset the application.

  • Removing your library cards deletes your card information, loans, and holds from the app, but preserves your tags and activity. Here are the steps:
    1. Go to Menu> See Library Cards.
    2. Tap Actions (on your card).
    3. Tap Remove Card, then Yes, Remove Card.
  • Resetting the application deletes all data from Libby, including tags and activity, which can't be recovered. To do so, go to Menu > Set Up Libby > Troubleshooting > Reset Application.
 Which app should I use?
If you use one iOS or Android device to browse, download, and read or listen to digital books, we recommend trying Libby. It's a great one-device experience.

If you like to read books on many devices, or prefer to browse for new titles on your computer, stick with the OverDrive app. Also, if you make use of accessibility features in the OverDrive app, you'll need to stick with that until more accessibility features get added to Libby.

If you're concerned about excluding mature content in your digital reading app, stick with the OverDrive app. If you want the kids in your life to be able to browse only for kids' books, and not see other titles, you'll want to stay with the OverDrive app as well.

What format are the digital books in Libby?

Unless you tell it otherwise (see the Kindle FAQ below), Libby downloads digital books in the Read or Listen formats. By default, all digital books under 20 MB (basically e-books only) will download to Libby automatically for offline reading. To download audiobooks, which are much bigger files, you'll need to tell Libby to start downloading. You can adjust these settings by opening the menu and tapping on Download Settings.

I like to read on a Kindle eReader. Should I use the Libby app to discover books?

Give it a try! The Libby app is a different browsing experience than the OverDrive app, and you may prefer it. You can let Libby know that you read e-books on your Kindle Fire HD and HDX by tapping on the menu, and then on Download Settings. When you check out a Kindle Fire format e-book, it will send it to your Kindle Fire HD and HDX, rather than downloading the book to Libby.

I checked out a book using the OverDrive app, or using the OverDrive website on my computer, and now I can't return it early in Libby.

Books added to the Libby app are in the Read or Listen formats. If you downloaded a book in EPUB format or an audiobook in MP3 format to the OverDrive app, it cannot be returned early from the Libby app. With the exception of Read or Listen formats, titles you download need to be returned early from the device they were downloaded to. All titles expire automatically after the loan period.

Can I use more than one library card or cards from different libraries in Libby?

Yes! Libby makes it easy to switch between library cards or between different libraries. Open the menu, then tap on Switch Library or Library Cards. The best part is that all your digital checkouts from different cards and libraries are on the same shelf, so there is no need to switch between libraries or cards to read your books.

Want to see the current, popular titles? What others are checking out? Check out our OverDrive Dashboard.

What if I need more help with Libby?

Libby help is available at https://help.libbyapp.com and via the Tips & Secrets option in the app's menu. You can also stop by any of our locations and ask for assistance.
